Within York’s Central Historic Core Conservation Area, this mid-terrace townhouse called for a sensitive approach. We demolished an outdated outbuilding and added two contemporary single-storey rear extensions, creating a new open-plan kitchen and dining space and an energy-efficient utility and shower room.

The design pairs natural materials with a modern zinc roof, in subtle contrast to the heritage brickwork. Timber-framed glazing and exposed timber rafters beneath rooflights bring daylight into the kitchen, while lilac-painted beams add a touch of colour.

Like-for-like replacement of the sash windows and an upgraded front garden in York stone complete the scheme.
