Leverhulme Centre

Specialist Fit-Out | Interior Design

The Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity (LCAB) at the University of York is an interdisciplinary research facility designed to foster collaboration. Mass Architecture led the fit-out project from concept to completion, working closely with both the University Estate’s team and the Biology Department.

The design focused on creating flexible working environments for academics, including social spaces, desks, meeting rooms, and offices. A key concept was a customizable 3D grid framework of slender black steel, offering adaptable storage and zoning.

This framework defines the space, supports personalisation, and even accommodates the growth of six indoor plant species, while addressing the challenges posed by the building’s long, narrow, and curved layout.

“Working with Mass Architecture on the refurbishment project for our Research Centre at the University of York has been a pleasure. Charlotte really engaged with our dual brief to create both interactive areas and quiet zones for individual working. Throughout the project we were assured of regular updates, honest feedback and personal attention. We would thoroughly recommend Mass and thank them for all their efforts in creating a space that is a pleasure to work in.”
