Conversion and Specialist Fit-Out

  • Location

    Green Lane, York

  • Completion Date

    2019

  • Project Cost

    £250,000

The project was to create an independent vets clinic in Acomb, York that differentiated itself from the larger chain practices. The work involved structural alterations, specialist fit-out and external works to a former residential care home.

The client wanted to adopt green principles wherever possible within the design. They did this through the use of bespoke FSC plywood furniture designed by Mass Architecture and made by Wilf Williams Furniture, as well as a lino floor finish and low energy LED lighting. The external works to create a new customer parking area comprised of recycled plastic grid with recycled aggregate and grass seed infill.

Mass were involved in all work stages; from initial design concept, selection of suitable builders to contract administration of the construction process. In addition, we recommended appropriate specialist consultants such as United By Design who developed the branding and associated website and marketing material.

The reception area was designed to ‘cat friendly’ guidelines, which led to the furniture being laid out to create a separate area for cats and dogs, reducing the stress caused to cats.

The practice has two consultations rooms, one housing an x-ray machine. This mean’t that the room (walls, doors, ceiling) had to be designed to block x-rays using lead lining or additional layers of plasterboard.

The facility included an on-site staff apartment to the first floor as well as a rear garden used to grow vegetables.
