Conservation of Existing Barns
The developer/client wanted to convert two existing C19th barns in to two high quality dwellings. The barns face each other across a courtyard and are connected at the rear by a high brick wall from the same period.
Retaining the essential character of the barns was important in creating an appealing and individual place to live. We created additional space for the houses by added a new two-storey contemporary element that rises from behind the old wall
Using the technique of contrasting materials and detailing in this way, we have distinguished the new from the old, which is a design philosophy now favoured by Heritage England and planning authorities.
