The existing building (an old piano factory) was a three-storey brick and concrete structure. We covered the external envelope in 100mm insulation, which was then rendered or clad in Siberian larch. A new floor was added using a timber frame structure with solar hot water panels to the roof. The new four-storey accommodation comprises of a ground floor flat with a 3-storey dwelling above with recording studio and two outdoor terraces. The refurbishment has reduced energy consumption/carbon emissions by 40% (as measured in the first year after completion).
